Aspectos da vida familiar na estrategia de ascensao social e politica do 1. marques de Pombal

Understanding the extent to which some familiar aspects were part of the strategy of social and political ascension of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the influence his marriages had, who the godparents of his children were, to which families the daughters and sons in law of the statesman belonged, in what context their marriages were held, are the main questions that this essay seeks to answer.

In full Old Regime, at a time when private and public life were separated by a fine line, the story of Pombal, rather than not being an exception to this rule may indeed have been a paradigm of the overlapping of these spaces.

Published in the latest edition of the Armas e Troféus magazine, by the Instituto Português de Heráldica, this article gave substance to two talks presented by the author on the 22nd of February and the 20th of June 2012 in the Portuguese Academy of History and the aforementioned Institute, respectively.
